Joanna is married with four grown up children. On leaving school she would have liked to attend art college but instead qualified as a physiotherapist, later setting up in private practice.

Despite the demands of a full time career, being a naval officer's wife and bringing up four children, often alone, she also managed to run part of the British Ski Federation for several years and became a silversmith.

In 1997 after buying a small detailed painting of a chestnut she was so intrigued by it that she decided to study the art of botanical illustration herself. A year later she gave up her physiotherapy practice and has since been painting and exhibiting regularly in London, abroad and elsewhere in the UK. She paints in watercolour on both paper and vellum.

In 2004 she was given the Joyce Cummings Presentation Award for best botanical watercolour at the Society of Botanical Artists annual open exhibition. Her work is published in The Apothecary's Garden (2005) and in The Art of Botanical Painting (2004) where it was also selected for the cover. An illustration of a wild strawberry has been chosen for a 2007 calendar. She holds six Royal Horticultural Society medals: Silver Gilt 1999, 2002, 2003 and 2005; Silver 2001; Bronze 1999.

Joanna is currently a member of the Society of Botanical Artists Ltd, a fellow of the Chelsea Physic Garden Florilegium Society, a member of the Society of Floral Painters, the American Society of Botanical Painters and the Nyeman's Florilegium Society.

Her work is in various collections both in the United Kingdom and abroad. She has had two pictures selected for inclusion in the Highgrove Florilegium under the umbrella of the Prince of Wales Trust and five for the CPGF collection.
